Chapter 9 - THE NAME BEHIND THE PLAN
The statement changed everything.
Daniel’s mother wasn't the mastermind.
She was a piece.
A dangerous piece.
But still only a piece.
The detective questioned Daniel again.
This time, Daniel talked.
Not because he suddenly became good.
Because he was scared.
He admitted Evelyn controlled him for years.
“She always said the family name mattered more than feelings.”
The detective asked:
“And who was she working with?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My father’s lawyer.”
Michael froze.
“My father’s lawyer died five years ago.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at us.
“He didn't.”
The room went silent.
The lawyer who managed the family trust.
The man everyone believed was dead.
Was alive.
And helping them.
That night, Michael searched old records.
He found the name.
Victor Hale.
A man known for making problems disappear.
The next morning, we received a package.
No sender.
Inside was a letter.
Only one sentence.
Stop digging, or your child will disappear before he takes his first breath.
I held the letter.
My hands shook.
But this time…
I wasn't afraid.
I was angry.
“Michael.”
“Yes?”
“I want to meet him.”
Michael looked at me.
“No.”
“I'm done running.”
“You’re pregnant.”
“I know.”
I touched my stomach.
“That’s exactly why I have to fight.”
Michael looked at me.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
But neither of us noticed the car parked across the street.
Inside the car…
Someone was watching.
And taking pictures.
