Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The footage played on the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Daniel.
The room was silent.
The video showed the balcony.
Me walking outside.
The railing moving.
Then falling.
Then Evelyn appearing.
Then Daniel.
Every second.
Every movement.
Every choice.
The officer paused the video.
“Mr. Carter.”
Daniel looked down.
“You have anything to say?”
He had no answer.
For the first time…
Daniel looked small.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Still.
Cold.
Until the officer turned the screen toward her.
“You were aware the railing was damaged.”
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Michael noticed.
“You knew.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You have no idea what you're accusing me of.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You replaced your grandson’s future with your own greed.”
The officer took out handcuffs.
“Mrs. Carter.”
Evelyn screamed.
“This is a misunderstanding!”
Nobody believed her.
As they walked her away, she turned back.
And looked directly at me.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Smiling.
That scared me more.
Because people who lose everything usually break.
Evelyn didn't.
That night, I returned home under police protection.
The house looked different.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
But it no longer felt like home.
Then I found something on my bedroom door.
A small envelope.
No name.
No address.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of me.
Sleeping.
Taken inside my own bedroom.
And written on the back were five words:
You still don’t know the truth.
