Chapter 19 - THE DOCTOR WHO SOLD MY TRUST

The recording played again.

My doctor’s voice.

Calm.

Professional.

Fake.

“I confirmed the pregnancy.”

Victor answered:

“Good.”

“And the baby?”

“Healthy.”

My hands shook.

The woman I trusted.

The woman who touched my stomach.

The woman who told me everything would be okay.

Was reporting to them.

Daniel looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I didn't answer.

Because sorry was too small.

Too late.

The police arrested Dr. Parker that night.

But before she was taken away, she asked to speak with me.

I almost refused.

But I needed to know.

“Why?”

I asked.

She looked ashamed.

“I had debts.”

I stared.

“That’s your reason?”

“No.”

She started crying.

“I was afraid.”

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“Everyone who hurts people says they were afraid.”

The room went silent.

She looked down.

“I made a terrible choice.”

“Yes.”

My voice was calm.

“You did.”

For the first time in months…

I stopped feeling like a victim.

I wasn't just surviving anymore.

I was deciding.

The next morning, Daniel asked to see me.

I expected excuses.

He gave none.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

I said nothing.

“But I want to protect our child.”

I looked at him.

“Our child?”

He nodded.

“I know I lost the right to say that.”

The honesty hurt.

Because a part of me remembered the man I loved.

Before everything.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

“But…”

He looked up.

“But?”

I took a breath.

“You can help fix what you broke.”

For the first time…

Daniel cried.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just silently.

Like someone finally accepting the damage he caused.

Then Michael rushed into the room.

His face was pale.

“Anna.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

He held a document.

“The court records.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about them?”

He looked at me.

“Someone filed for emergency custody.”

“Who?”

Michael handed me the paper.

The name at the bottom made my blood run cold.

Because Evelyn wasn't the person who filed.

It was someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone I trusted.
