Chapter 13 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY BROKE

Daniel sat alone in the interrogation room.
For hours.
No lawyer.
No mother.
No excuses.
Just silence.
Until Michael entered.
Daniel looked up.
“You came.”
Michael placed a folder down.
“You almost killed your wife.”
Daniel looked away.
“I know.”
“You tried to steal your child.”
“I know.”
Michael stared.
“Then why?”
Daniel stayed quiet.
Finally:
“Because I was scared.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You expect sympathy?”
“No.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I expect nothing.”
For the first time, Michael saw something different.
Not innocence.
Not forgiveness.
Regret.
“I thought if I controlled everything, nobody could hurt me.”
Michael shook his head.
“You hurt everyone instead.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Then he revealed something.
Something nobody expected.
“My mother didn't order the balcony accident.”
Michael froze.
“What?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Victor did.”
The room became silent.
“Why?”
Daniel looked up.
“Because Victor realized my mother was becoming a liability.”
Michael stood.
“You knew?”
Daniel’s face broke.
“I found out afterward.”
“After Anna almost died?”
“Yes.”
Michael wanted to hit him.
He didn't.
Because there was something worse.
The truth.
“You could have stopped it.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
That answer was more painful than a lie.
“I could have.”
Michael walked out.
But before leaving, Daniel called him back.
“One more thing.”
Michael turned.
“The baby…”
Daniel hesitated.
“He isn't the reason they wanted Anna.”
Michael frowned.
“What are you saying?”
Daniel whispered:
“The baby is connected to something bigger.”
