Chapter 1 - THE FALL THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

The first thing I felt was the cold air against my face.

Then came the sound.

A sharp crack.

A sound that did not belong inside a peaceful home.

I froze.

My hands tightened around the balcony curtain.

For one terrifying second, I didn't understand what had happened.

Then I looked down.

Two floors below me.

The marble ground waited.

My stomach turned.

Not because I was afraid of dying.

Because my baby was inside me.

“Help!”

My voice came out broken.

“Somebody help me!”

My fingers burned as they held onto the thin fabric.

The balcony railing had collapsed.

The same railing my husband Daniel promised would be repaired months ago.

The same railing his mother insisted was “perfectly safe.”

My feet searched for something to push against.

Nothing.

I was hanging over empty space.

Eight months pregnant.

Alone.

Except I wasn't alone.

Someone was watching.

I saw her standing behind the balcony door.

My mother-in-law.

Evelyn Carter.

She wasn't screaming.

She wasn't calling for help.

She was just standing there.

Watching.

“Evelyn!”

I cried.

“Please!”

Her face didn't change.

That was the moment my fear became something else.

Confusion.

Because a normal person would panic.

A normal person would run.

A normal person would grab a phone.

But Evelyn slowly walked closer.

“You know what your problem is, Anna?”

My blood ran cold.

“Help me!”

“You always believed you belonged here.”

The wind moved through my hair.

I looked at her.

“What are you talking about?”

She smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“This house.”

She looked around the luxury estate.

“Everything Daniel owns.”

Her eyes moved down to my stomach.

“Everything your child thinks he will inherit.”

My grip tightened.

“Evelyn…”

“Let go.”

The words destroyed me.

I stared at her.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

A tear rolled down my face.

“You want me to die?”

She tilted her head.

“I want my family protected.”

“My baby is your family!”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Your baby is a problem.”

My heart shattered.

Before I could respond, footsteps came running.

“ANNA!”

I heard another voice.

Mrs. Rose.

The old housekeeper.

She appeared through the balcony doors.

Her face turned white.

“Oh my God.”

She dropped the basket in her hands.

“Mrs. Carter!”

Evelyn stepped back.

“Stay out of this.”

Rose ignored her.

She rushed forward.

“Anna, look at me.”

I was crying.

“Rose…”

“I have you.”

She grabbed my wrist.

Her old hands shook.

But she held on.

“I won't let go.”

For the first time in minutes, I felt hope.

Someone was fighting for me.

Someone cared.

Then Evelyn moved.

Slowly.

Quietly.

She stepped on Rose’s foot.

Rose screamed.

The pain made her lose balance.

“Stop!”

I shouted.

“Evelyn, stop!”

Rose refused to release me.

“I have you, sweetheart!”

Evelyn pressed harder.

The old woman fell to one knee.

Her fingers slipped.

“No…”

Rose whispered.

“I'm sorry…”

Then the balcony door opened again.

A man walked out.

Daniel.

My husband.

The man I loved.

The father of my child.

“Daniel!”

I cried.

“Please!”

He looked at me.

Hanging.

Terrified.

Broken.

For one second, I believed everything would be okay.

He was here.

He would save me.

He would choose us.

“Daniel…”

My voice cracked.

“Help me.”

He didn't move.

Something inside me went cold.

“Daniel?”

He looked at his mother.

Then at me.

And what I saw in his eyes hurt more than falling.

No fear.

No panic.

Only a decision.

“Mom was right.”

The world stopped.

“What?”

He walked closer.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like this was just another business problem.

“Daniel…”

My voice trembled.

“What are you doing?”

He reached into his pocket.

And pulled out a knife.

Rose screamed.

“No!”

My husband opened the blade.

He grabbed the curtain.

“Daniel…”

I couldn't breathe.

“Please.”

He looked at my stomach.

Then at my face.

“That baby will destroy everything.”

The knife touched the fabric.

“You mean nothing to me?”

I whispered.

His eyes didn't move.

“I'm sorry.”

The blade cut.

Once.

The curtain tore.

A piece of fabric fell.

My fingers slipped.

Rose grabbed me tighter.

“DANIEL!”

But he cut again.

The last thread remained.

And before it broke completely…

I heard a voice from inside the house.

A voice I never expected.

“Daniel Carter.”

Everyone froze.

The knife stopped.

A man stood at the doorway.

Holding a phone.

Recording everything.

“You might want to explain why you're trying to kill your pregnant wife.”

Daniel turned white.

Because the man standing there was the one person who could destroy him.

His older brother.

Michael.

And Michael had heard everything.
