Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT THEY CAME FOR MY CHILD

Everything happened too fast.

Michael pushed me behind the couch.

The detective who followed us pulled his weapon.

Victor crawled toward the hallway.

Another window broke.

Someone was trying to get inside.

I covered my stomach.

My baby started moving.

Like he knew something was wrong.

“It’s okay.”

I whispered.

“It’s okay.”

But I wasn't sure.

The front door exploded open.

Three masked men rushed inside.

They weren’t thieves.

They weren’t random criminals.

They moved like professionals.

They knew exactly what they wanted.

“Find her.”

One of them said.

My blood froze.

Find her.

Not the money.

Not Victor.

Me.

Michael fought the first man who reached us.

The detective fired a warning shot.

“Police!”

The attackers didn't care.

That scared me more.

Normal criminals ran from police.

These people didn't.

They believed they were untouchable.

Victor grabbed my arm.

“Come with me.”

I pulled away.

“Why should I trust you?”

His face changed.

For the first time…

He looked human.

“Because I'm the reason they are coming.”

“What?”

“I created the system.”

He swallowed.

“And now I'm trying to destroy it.”

Before I could answer, another explosion shook the room.

The back wall cracked.

Michael shouted:

“Anna!”

I turned.

One of the men had reached the hallway.

He was holding a folder.

My folder.

My medical records.

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what you're carrying.”

Then he ran.

Michael chased him.

I followed.

I don’t know why.

Maybe anger.

Maybe desperation.

Maybe because I was tired of everyone knowing the truth except me.

We reached the backyard.

The man jumped into a waiting car.

But before he escaped…

He dropped something.

A small device.

Michael picked it up.

His face changed.

“What is it?”

He looked at me.

“A tracking chip.”

My hand went to my stomach.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Anna…”

“It’s impossible.”

But then Victor spoke.

Quietly.

“It isn't.”

He looked at my baby.

“They didn't just want your child.”

He paused.

“They wanted to know where he was at all times.”
