Chapter 15 - THE CONFESSION BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

I didn't want to meet Daniel.

I hated that I still cared.

But I needed answers.

The meeting happened in a secure room.

Daniel looked different.

Older.

Broken.

“Anna.”

I sat across from him.

“Tell me.”

He looked down.

“I made a deal.”

My heart sank.

“With who?”

“Victor.”

The anger came back instantly.

“You worked with him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought I could control the situation.”

I laughed.

“You thought?”

“I was wrong.”

Silence.

He continued.

“He promised my mother everything would stay in the family.”

“And you believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

That was the truth.

The ugliest kind.

Not because he didn't know.

Because he didn't want to know.

“What did he want?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The baby.”

I waited.

“Not custody.”

I frowned.

“Then what?”

Daniel whispered:

“Access.”

The word made my skin crawl.

“What does that mean?”

“He wanted the child raised under his influence.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“Because your baby carries something they cannot buy.”

I stared.

“What?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

He looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“Proof that the Carter family fortune was built on a crime.”

I froze.

Before I could ask more…

The lights went out.

Again.

A sound came from the hallway.

A lock turning.

Daniel stood.

“Anna.”

His face was pale.

“We need to leave.”

“What happened?”

He looked at the door.

“They found us.”

The handle slowly moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Daniel whispered:

“For once…”

“Trust me.”

The door began to break.

And the person standing outside said:

“Daniel.”

A woman’s voice.

Evelyn.

“I know you're in there.”
