Chapter 17 - THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO INHERIT

Nobody spoke.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Daniel.
Then back again.
“That’s you.”
Daniel looked away.
He knew.
“You knew?”
I asked.
His silence was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Daniel.”
He closed his eyes.
“I found out years ago.”
“Found out what?”
“That I wasn't born into the Carter family.”
The words hit harder than expected.
Evelyn remained silent.
Almost proud.
“You were adopted.”
Daniel looked at her.
“By you.”
“Yes.”
The room became unbearable.
“You knew?”
I asked Evelyn.
She didn't deny it.
“I raised him.”
Daniel laughed.
A painful sound.
“You raised me to believe I was special.”
“I made you special.”
“No.”
His voice became stronger.
“You made me useful.”
That was the first time I saw Daniel stand against her.
Not for me.
Not yet.
For himself.
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“You ungrateful child.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You never loved me.”
She didn't answer.
Because the silence confirmed everything.
Michael arrived minutes later with police.
Evelyn didn't resist.
She simply smiled.
Because she still believed she had another card.
As officers escorted her away, she whispered:
“You still don’t know who your child’s real family is.”
I watched her leave.
And for the first time…
I wondered.
Was Evelyn the monster?
Or was she protecting a secret even bigger?
