Chapter 2 - THE BROTHER WHO SAW THE TRUTH

Nobody moved.
The wind was the only sound.
My fingers were numb.
My body was shaking.
But I was still alive.
Because Rose refused to let go.
Because someone finally arrived.
Michael Carter walked toward us.
His phone remained raised.
Recording.
“Daniel.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“What exactly were you planning?”
Daniel lowered the knife.
“This isn't what it looks like.”
Michael looked at the torn curtain.
Then at me.
Then at Rose.
“Really?”
He gave a cold laugh.
“Because it looks exactly like attempted murder.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.”
Michael looked at her.
“No.”
He pointed the phone.
“I understand perfectly.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Turn that off.”
Michael smiled.
“No.”
“Give me the phone.”
“No.”
Daniel moved forward.
Michael didn't step back.
That surprised me.
Because Daniel had always been the powerful one.
The successful one.
The favorite son.
But Michael wasn't afraid.
“You finally crossed the line.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.”
Michael looked at me.
“Anna.”
I couldn't answer.
I was too exhausted.
Rose helped pull me back onto the balcony.
The second my feet touched the ground, my knees collapsed.
Daniel reached toward me.
I flinched.
He stopped.
That hurt him.
But not enough.
“Anna…”
I stared at him.
“Don’t.”
One word.
But it carried everything.
The betrayal.
The fear.
The heartbreak.
Michael called emergency services.
Evelyn watched silently.
And that terrified me.
Because she wasn't shocked.
She wasn't scared.
She was calculating.
At the hospital, doctors checked the baby.
Thankfully, the baby was okay.
But my mind wasn't.
A police officer came to my room.
“Mrs. Carter.”
I looked up.
“Yes?”
“We need to ask what happened.”
I opened my mouth.
Then stopped.
Because Daniel was standing behind the officer.
Watching me.
Waiting.
A warning.
A threat.
I understood.
He wanted me silent.
The old Anna might have stayed quiet.
The old Anna might have protected her marriage.
But the woman lying in that hospital bed had almost died.
So I looked directly at the officer.
“My husband tried to cut the curtain while I was hanging from the balcony.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Anna.”
The officer turned.
“Mr. Carter, please step outside.”
For the first time…
Daniel looked afraid.
But before he left, Evelyn whispered something.
Something only I heard.
“This is not over.”
That night, while I was trying to sleep, my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
Your husband did not try to kill you because of the baby.
Another message appeared.
He tried because he found out who the real father of your child is.
