Chapter 7 - THE PERSON HIDING IN THE HOUSE

The detective pulled his weapon.

Everyone became silent.

Michael stood in front of me.

Protecting me.

The opposite of Daniel.

“Stay here,” he whispered.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“Anna.”

“I'm done hiding.”

My voice surprised even me.

“I spent months being afraid.”

I looked toward the stairs.

“I'm not anymore.”

The detective moved first.

Slow.

Careful.

Every step echoed.

Then we heard footsteps.

Someone running.

The back door slammed open.

The detective chased after them.

Michael followed.

I stayed behind.

Until I saw something on the floor.

A small object.

A key.

I picked it up.

There was a symbol engraved on it.

The Carter family logo.

My heart sank.

Someone from inside the family.

The detective returned ten minutes later.

Empty-handed.

“Lost them.”

Michael looked at the key in my hand.

“Where did you find that?”

“On the floor.”

His expression changed.

Because he recognized it.

“What?”

“That key belongs to Daniel.”

The room became cold.

“Daniel?”

Michael nodded.

“He used it for a private storage room.”

“What storage room?”

He looked at me.

“The one nobody was allowed to enter.”

The next morning, we opened it.

Inside were boxes.

Documents.

Photos.

Files.

A whole secret life.

Daniel had been collecting information.

About me.

About my pregnancy.

About my family.

Then I found a folder with my name.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

Inside were medical records.

Private records.

My doctor’s notes.

My unborn baby’s information.

Someone had been planning this since before I knew.

Then Michael found a second folder.

His face changed.

“What?”

He slowly turned it around.

The label read:

PROJECT HEIR REPLACEMENT
