Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO NEVER DIED

Victor Hale lived in a quiet neighborhood.

Almost too quiet.

The kind of place where nobody asked questions.

Michael and I watched from the car.

“He knows we’re coming.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

Michael pointed.

A curtain moved.

Someone was watching us.

We walked to the door anyway.

Victor opened it before we knocked.

He was older.

But his eyes were sharp.

“You’re Anna.”

Not a question.

I stepped forward.

“You know who I am.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He smiled.

“Because I helped create you.”

My stomach turned.

“What?”

He laughed.

“Not literally.”

He looked at Michael.

“Your father built an empire.”

Michael’s expression hardened.

“And you destroyed it.”

Victor ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Do you know why your husband married you?”

I felt cold.

“Because he loved me.”

Victor smiled.

“That’s what you believe.”

I hated him instantly.

“What are you saying?”

He opened a drawer.

Pulled out a file.

And handed it to me.

Inside was a photo.

A younger Daniel.

With Evelyn.

And another woman.

A woman I recognized.

Because I had seen her before.

My doctor.

The doctor who monitored my pregnancy.

My blood went cold.

Victor whispered:

“Your pregnancy was never an accident.”

I looked up.

“What does that mean?”

He leaned closer.

“It means your baby was chosen before you ever knew you were pregnant.”

Then he smiled.

“And Daniel was never the father they wanted.”

I couldn't breathe.

Because suddenly…

The entire story changed.
