Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO FORGED MY FUTURE

The signature looked exactly like mine.
That was the most terrifying part.
Not that it was fake.
That someone knew me well enough to copy it.
Michael watched my face.
“You recognize it?”
“Yes.”
My voice was barely audible.
“That’s my signature.”
“But you didn't sign it.”
“No.”
My hands tightened around the paper.
“I never signed anything.”
Michael nodded.
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because I checked the date.”
He pointed.
“You were admitted to the hospital that day.”
I remembered.
The pregnancy complications.
The emergency visit.
The medication.
I was barely conscious.
Someone had planned everything.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Maybe both.
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“Your husband is here.”
My body immediately tensed.
Michael stood.
“I'll stay.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I need to hear what he says.”
Daniel walked in.
He looked different.
Less confident.
More tired.
But I couldn't forget the knife.
“I want to talk.”
I didn't answer.
He looked at Michael.
“Alone.”
Michael laughed.
“Not happening.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Anna.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
One word.
His face changed.
“Why did you do this?”
Silence.
Then:
“I was trying to protect my family.”
I almost couldn't believe it.
“Your family?”
He stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
My voice became stronger.
“I understand everything.”
“You think I wanted this?”
“Yes.”
He looked hurt.
Good.
He should.
“You chose a knife.”
His eyes dropped.
For a moment…
I saw guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“I need you to sign something.”
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You’re serious?”
He placed papers on the table.
“Temporary custody.”
I stared.
“You came here after trying to kill me…”
I pushed the papers away.
“And asked me to give you my child?”
Daniel whispered:
“Anna…”
“No.”
The door opened.
A police officer entered.
“Mr. Carter.”
Daniel turned.
“We need you to come with us.”
His face changed.
“Why?”
The officer looked at him.
“Because we found security footage from the estate.”
Daniel froze.
Michael smiled slightly.
And I realized…
The balcony had cameras.
Daniel had forgotten one thing.
He had witnesses.
