Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LOST CONTROL

The door shook again.
Evelyn’s voice came from the other side.
“Daniel.”
A pause.
“You know running never worked for you.”
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time since I met him…
I saw real fear.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing power.
Fear of the woman outside.
“She controls everything,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“You’re afraid of your own mother.”
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
The answer surprised me.
Because Daniel had spent months pretending he was powerful.
But behind all that arrogance…
There was a frightened man who had spent his entire life trying to earn approval.
The door cracked.
Michael’s voice came through my phone.
“Anna, where are you?”
I quickly answered.
“Locked inside.”
“Who is with you?”
I looked at Daniel.
My husband.
The man who betrayed me.
The man who saved me from something worse.
I didn't know what he was anymore.
“Daniel.”
Silence.
Then Michael said:
“Don’t trust him.”
I knew.
I knew I shouldn’t.
But before I could answer…
The door opened.
Not broken.
Opened.
Because someone had the key.
Evelyn walked inside.
Perfect hair.
Perfect clothes.
Perfect smile.
Like she wasn't standing in the middle of a war.
“You always make things difficult, Daniel.”
He stepped in front of me.
“No.”
Evelyn looked surprised.
“You’re protecting her?”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“I'm fixing what I did.”
She laughed.
“You think you can become a good man in one day?”
Nobody answered.
Because she was right.
Daniel couldn't erase what he did.
Neither could anyone.
But he could choose what he did next.
Evelyn looked at me.
“You caused all of this.”
I stared.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
She walked closer.
“If you had just signed the papers…”
I interrupted.
“You mean if I had let you steal my child.”
Her smile disappeared.
“He belongs to this family.”
I touched my stomach.
“No.”
My voice was quiet.
“He belongs to himself.”
For the first time…
Evelyn looked angry.
Actually angry.
“You have no idea what you're carrying.”
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.”
She smiled.
“You’re finally asking the right question.”
She placed a folder on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
A man.
A woman.
A newborn baby.
And a name.
My blood turned cold.
Because the baby in the picture…
Was Daniel.
