Chapter 23 - THE CURTAIN THAT HELD

One year later, I returned to the Carter estate.
The balcony had been rebuilt.
A stronger railing.
New wood.
New memories.
I stood there holding my son.
The same place where I almost lost everything.
The same place where everyone thought my story would end.
But it didn't.
Daniel stood beside me.
Not as my owner.
Not as someone who controlled my future.
As someone trying to become worthy of standing there.
“I still hate this balcony.”
I smiled slightly.
“I know.”
He looked at me.
“Do you ever think about that day?”
Every day.
But I didn't say it.
Because pain doesn't disappear.
It changes.
“It reminds me of something.”
“What?”
I looked down at my son.
“That people can let go.”
Daniel understood.
The curtain.
The betrayal.
The people who chose money over love.
But I held on.
A year earlier, I thought losing everything meant losing my life.
I was wrong.
Sometimes losing everything shows you what was never real.
Evelyn was sentenced for her part in the conspiracy.
Dr. Parker lost her license and faced criminal charges.
Victor Hale’s empire collapsed after the hidden records became public.
The Carter fortune was placed under investigation.
But the biggest change was something money could never buy.
The truth came out.
And my son would grow up knowing exactly who fought for him.
Not who wanted to own him.
Daniel never asked me to forget.
He never asked me to pretend.
He simply showed up.
Every day.
Slowly.
Patiently.
And maybe someday…
I would fully forgive him.
Maybe.
But forgiveness was not something someone could demand.
It was something they had to deserve.
My son grabbed my finger.
I smiled.
The wind moved through the balcony.
The curtain beside me moved softly.
But this time…
It didn't break.
It didn't fall.
It held.
And so did I.
THE END.
