Chapter 6 - THE CAMERA IN MY BEDROOM

I stared at the photograph until my hands went numb.
It was impossible.
Someone had been inside my bedroom.
Someone had stood close enough to hear me breathe.
Close enough to take a picture.
And I had no idea.
Michael found me sitting on the edge of the bed.
The photo was still in my hand.
“Anna.”
I looked up.
His face changed when he saw it.
“What is that?”
I handed it to him.
He didn't speak for several seconds.
Then his jaw tightened.
“This changes everything.”
I swallowed.
“What do you mean?”
He turned the picture over.
“Whoever left this wanted you scared.”
“They succeeded.”
He looked at me.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“They wanted you scared enough to make a mistake.”
I looked around my room.
Every shadow felt different.
Every corner felt watched.
“My husband did this?”
Michael didn't answer immediately.
That silence hurt.
“Michael.”
“I don’t know.”
I hated that answer.
Because I wanted someone to tell me exactly who was guilty.
But the truth was worse.
The truth was that the person who promised to protect me might have been the person I needed protection from.
The police searched the house that night.
They found something behind the old wooden cabinet in the hallway.
A small recording device.
My stomach turned.
“How long?”
The detective looked serious.
“We’re checking.”
“Checking what?”
He hesitated.
“Checking how long it was active.”
I already knew.
Long enough.
Long enough for someone to hear my private conversations.
Long enough to know my fears.
Long enough to build a plan.
Then Michael found something else.
A hidden envelope inside Daniel’s office.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
The baby must never be born.
My entire body froze.
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
Before he could finish, the lights went out.
The whole house went dark.
Then we heard something.
A crash upstairs.
Someone was inside.
