Chapter 20 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL

I stared at the name.
I couldn't breathe.
“No.”
Michael looked at me.
“Anna…”
“No.”
I pushed the paper away.
“That’s impossible.”
Because the person who filed the custody request…
Was Rose.
The old maid who saved my life.
The woman who held my hand when everyone else wanted me gone.
Daniel looked shocked.
“She wouldn't.”
But the evidence was there.
Documents.
Signatures.
Legal requests.
Everything.
I felt broken all over again.
The one person I trusted.
The one person who stood beside me.
Why?
The answer came that night.
Rose came to the house.
Alone.
Crying.
I didn't let her inside.
“Why?”
She looked devastated.
“Anna…”
“Why did you do it?”
She covered her face.
“I didn't.”
“Then explain.”
She handed me a letter.
“My grandson.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He was threatened.”
She cried.
“They had him.”
The anger inside me changed.
Not disappeared.
Changed.
“Who?”
Rose looked toward the dark road.
Then whispered:
“Victor.”
I felt sick.
“But Victor is arrested.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“He planned everything before anyone knew his name.”
A car stopped outside.
The headlights filled the room.
Rose looked terrified.
“Anna…”
“What?”
“He’s here.”
The front door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to open it.
Daniel stepped forward.
Michael reached for his phone.
And I stood there.
Eight months pregnant.
Holding my stomach.
Ready.
Because this time…
I wasn't the woman hanging from a curtain.
This time…
I was waiting for them.
The door opened.
And Victor Hale walked inside.
Smiling.
“Congratulations, Anna.”
He looked at my stomach.
“You finally understand.”
I stared at him.
“Understand what?”
He smiled.
“That the baby was never your weakness.”
A pause.
“He was your weapon.”
