Chapter 9 - The Rehearsal Dinner That Never Was

The next morning, the sun rose over a city that felt completely unfamiliar.
Our wedding rehearsal dinner was scheduled for that evening at the Harbor Club—a private, members-only venue Marcus had booked to show off to his corporate partners.
My phone had eighty-four missed calls. Forty from Marcus, twenty-two from Elena, and the rest from Marcus’s mother, Evelyn Hayes.
I finally picked up Evelyn’s call at 10 AM.
"Chloe Vance!" Evelyn’s shrill, aristocratic voice pierced my ear. "What is the meaning of this? Marcus told me you’ve gone completely insane, calling the police on his car and threatening your own sister! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for our family?"
"Good morning, Evelyn," I said calmly, sipping my black coffee.
"Cancel whatever ridiculous complaints you filed immediately!" she demanded. "The rehearsal is at seven. The partners from Boston are already flying in. You will put on your dress, you will stand by Marcus’s side, and we will sort out this nonsense privately after the ceremony!"
"There won't be a ceremony, Evelyn."
"Excuse me?"
"Your son forged my name on tax shelters, rented a $4,200 penthouse for my sister, and got her pregnant with your future grandchild," I said, enunciating every syllable. "And by the way, that family heirloom bracelet you told me was lost in probate? Elena’s wearing it."
Silence. Dead, frozen silence on the other end of the line.
"That... that is impossible," Evelyn choked out. "Elena is... she wouldn't..."
"Check her Instagram story, Evelyn. She posted a photo of her morning latte at the high-rise with your family crest clearly visible on the clasp."
I hung up before she could reply.
I looked at Carter, who was already on his second cup of espresso. "Are the financial packets ready?"
"Ready and duplicated," Carter smiled grimly. "Fifty copies. Bound and sealed."
"Good," I said, putting on my coat. "Let’s go crash our own rehearsal dinner."
