Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Marcus’s complexion turned the color of wet sidewalk cement.
"Chloe," he stammered, raising his hands like a man facing a loaded barrel. "Chloe, wait. Let me explain. This isn't—"
"Save it, Marcus," I said, stepping past him toward the door. "The lease. The keycard. The ultrasound. The robe. What exactly are you going to explain? The logistics?"
Marcus lunged forward, grabbing my forearm. "You can't just run off. We have half a million dollars tied up in the escrow account for the suburban house. You pull out now, we lose the deposit!"
"I don't care about the deposit," I snapped, yanking my arm out of his grip with enough force to knock him off balance.
"Chloe, be reasonable!" Elena barked from the kitchen, stepping closer to Marcus. "If you make a scene, his partners will pull his promotion! You ruin him, you ruin my baby’s future!"
I looked at the two of them standing side by side. They looked pathetic. Two vultures fighting over scraps they hadn't earned.
"I’m not making a scene," I said quietly, my eyes locking onto Marcus’s panicked gaze. "I’m going home to pack."
"Chloe, don't do anything stupid," Marcus pleaded, following me out into the hallway. "Let’s talk like adults. I love you. Elena is just... it was a mistake that got out of hand!"
Elena gasped behind him, but I was already inside the elevator.
As the stainless-steel doors slid shut, separating us, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in five years.
"Carter?" I said when the line connected.
"Chloe? What’s wrong? You sound like you’re in a warzone."
"You’re still a senior forensic accountant for the state attorney's office, right?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"I need you to audit Marcus Hayes's private consulting firm. Tonight."
