Chapter 16 - The Confession

At 10 AM, Carter and I sat in an interrogation observation room at the central precinct.

On the other side of the one-way glass, Elena sat handcuffed to the metal table, wearing a faded county jail jumpsuit, her makeup smeared across her cheeks.

The detective laid the fake ultrasound paperwork on the table.

"You want to explain this, Elena?" the detective asked.

Elena sniffled, wiping her nose with her orange sleeve. "Marcus was never going to leave Chloe. He told me for two years that he would leave her, but he always had an excuse. 'Wait until the promotion, wait until the bonus.' I knew the only way he’d actually set me up with a place of my own was if he thought I was carrying his heir."

"So you fabricated medical records and accepted over eighty thousand dollars in wired child support?"

"He had the money!" she cried out. "He stole it anyway! Why shouldn't I get a piece of it?"

Behind the glass, I let out a long breath.

Two narcissists, feeding on each other's greed, each trying to manipulate the other, while I had been standing in the middle like collateral damage.

"She’s looking at five to seven years for grand larceny by extortion," Carter said quietly next to me.

"Good," I said. "Let them share a courthouse."

I turned away from the glass. For the first time in three years, looking at Elena didn't make me feel small, betrayed, or inadequate.

It just made me feel free.
