Chapter 12 - The Eviction Reality

By midnight, the news of Marcus’s arrest had hit the local financial blogs.
With Marcus’s corporate accounts frozen, Elena’s luxury hotel room was declined at check-out. She called me forty times between 1 AM and 3 AM.
I sat on the patio of my small rental apartment—which Carter had helped me secure in my own name using clean funds—watching the city lights.
On the forty-first call, I answered.
"What do you want, Elena?"
"You ruined my life!" Elena was sobbing uncontrollably, the sound of traffic and sirens in the background. "They kicked me out of the hotel! They locked my luggage in the room until I pay the $1,800 bill! I’m sitting on a park bench with nothing!"
"You made your choice eight months ago when you slept with my fiancé," I said evenly.
"I have his baby inside me, Chloe! Doesn't blood mean anything to you?"
"Blood didn't stop you from framing me for tax fraud," I replied. "Blood didn't stop you from taking our mother’s jewelry. You wanted Marcus’s wealth. Well, this is what his wealth looks like without my credit score holding it together."
"Chloe, please... just send me five hundred dollars for a bus ticket home to Ohio. Just five hundred."
"Call Evelyn," I said. "She’s the grandmother."
"She blocked my number!" Elena wailed. "She told me she’s filing for full custody the second the child is born and kicking me to the curb!"
I paused for a second. The old Chloe would have felt pity. The old Chloe would have opened her banking app and wired the money.
Instead, I took a sip of water. "Goodbye, Elena."
I hung up, blocked her number permanently, and closed my eyes.
The drama was over.
Or so I thought, until my doorbell rang at 4:30 in the morning.
