Chapter 8 - The Stolen Mercedes

Marcus’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. "What? What are you talking about?"

"A silver Mercedes AMG!" Elena shrieked. "They have a flatbed towing it right out of the building's underground garage! They said the title was forged!"

Marcus slammed the phone off, glaring at me like he wanted to rip my throat out. "What did you do, Chloe?"

"Me?" I tilted my head. "I didn't do anything. But remember six months ago when you asked me to sign the paperwork for your new company car and said you lost the registration pink slip?"

"You reported it stolen?" he gasped.

"I didn't report anything. I just reported an unauthorized lien on my credit report," I replied sweetly. "The bank flagged the vehicle as fraudulent collateral. They repossessed it."

"You crazy bitch!" Marcus lunged across the table.

Carter stood up instantly, blocking him with an iron grip on Marcus’s collar, shoving him back against the wall. "Take one more step toward her and you’re leaving here in zip-ties for assault on a federal officer."

Marcus gasped for breath, his hair messy, his polished veneer completely shattered. "You think you’ve won, Chloe? That lease at the Sterling is tied to your credit score too. If Elena gets evicted, your score drops into the gutter! You’ll never rent an apartment in this city again!"

"Funny you should mention the lease," I said, pulling out a document Carter had printed ten minutes earlier. "Carter filed an emergency fraud injunction with the building’s leasing board an hour ago."

"Which means," Carter added, "Elena has exactly thirty minutes to vacate the premises before the building management removes her belongings to the sidewalk for criminal trespassing."

Marcus’s jaw dropped. "She’s pregnant!"

"Then you better hurry up and go help her carry her bags," I said. "Because your house keys are staying on that counter."

Marcus stared at me with pure venom, tore the keys off his ring, slammed them onto the granite island, and bolted out the door.

I sank into my chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

"It’s not over yet, Chloe," Carter said quietly. "He’s going to hit back. And he has his firm’s high-priced legal team behind him."
