Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail

"You’re being paranoid, Chloe. It’s just five hundred bucks."
Marcus didn't even look up from his phone. He took a slow, infuriating sip of his cold brew, his thumb scrolling through some sports forum like our shared checking account hadn't just bled dry.
"Five hundred bucks is groceries for two weeks, Marcus," I said, leaning over the kitchen island, slamming the printed bank statement flat against the quartz. "And it’s not just five hundred. It’s five hundred to Elena."
My sister’s name hung in the air like exhaust fumes. Elena, who hadn't spoken to me in three years after accusing me of stealing our late mother’s jewelry. Elena, who lived three states away—or so I thought.
"She hit a rough patch," Marcus muttered, his tone dripping with that condescending calm he always used when he wanted to make me feel crazy. "She reached out to me on LinkedIn. Said she was behind on car payments. What was I supposed to do? Let your only living family sleep on the street?"
"You were supposed to ask me!" My voice cracked, raw and sharp. "We share that account for the wedding venue deposit! Not for you to play white knight to a woman who told our entire family I was dead to her!"
Marcus stood up, towering over me in that fitted charcoal suit he wore for client meetings. He placed a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder—a gesture meant to soothe, but feeling more like a vice grip. "I handled it. It’s over. Drop it, babe. We have the florist meeting at six."
He grabbed his keys off the dish, pecked my cheek with dry, unbothered lips, and walked out to the garage.
I stood in the silent kitchen, staring at the paper. Something felt rancid in my gut. Marcus never gave away a dime without an angle. He was a ruthless corporate auditor who tracked his own coffee purchases down to the cent on Excel spreadsheets.
I walked into his home office, determined to find the real receipt. When I opened the center drawer of his mahogany desk, I didn't find an invoice.
I found a lease agreement for a luxury penthouse unit downtown. Signed by Marcus Hayes as the primary guarantor. For Elena Vance.
And attached to the lease was a duplicate key fob labeled: Master Bedroom.
