Chapter 17 - Reclaiming the Assets
Two weeks later, the legal dust began to settle.
With Marcus facing federal indictment and Elena locked up awaiting trial, the court-appointed receiver began unwinding the financial disaster.
Because Marcus had used my identity fraudulently, the court ordered full restitution from his personal seized assets to clear my credit completely.
I met Arthur Sterling at his corner office overlooking the harbor.
"Chloe," Arthur said warmly, standing to shake my hand. "The board reviewed your forensic assistance in uncovering Marcus’s embezzlement. Without your records, he would have drained our offshore trust dry before the quarterly audit."
"I just wanted the truth out, Mr. Sterling."
"Well, the truth saved this firm nearly four million dollars," he said, sliding a certified bank draft across his mahogany desk. "This is your full share of the joint house equity, plus a consulting fee authorized by the board for your cooperation with the federal investigation."
I looked at the number on the check: $250,000. Clean. Legal. Fully in my name.
"What will you do now?" Arthur asked.
"I’m starting over," I smiled. "From scratch."
