Chapter 11 - The Fall of Marcus Hayes

"Marcus," Arthur Sterling said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Is this authentic?"
Marcus looked like he was about to vomit. "Arthur... sir, let me explain. It’s an internal transfer error. The funds were going to be balanced before the quarter close—"
"You stole from my client trusts?" Sterling stepped closer, his face inches from Marcus’s. "To pay for a penthouse for your fiancée's sister?"
Elena stepped forward, her voice high and panicked. "Mr. Sterling, you don't understand! I’m carrying his baby! He did it for our family!"
Evelyn Hayes, who was standing near the banquet table, let out a choked shriek. "You did what, Marcus?"
The room exploded into furious murmurs. Elite guests began stepping back, whispering behind champagne flutes, pulling out their phones.
"Security," Sterling commanded without breaking eye contact with Marcus.
Two burly security guards in dark suits immediately flanked Marcus.
"You’re fired, Marcus. Effective thirty seconds ago," Sterling said coldly. "Your firm access is revoked. Your corporate accounts are frozen. And the firm will be filing immediate criminal charges for grand larceny and wire fraud."
"No, Arthur, please!" Marcus pleaded, falling to his knees on the carpet, clawing at Sterling’s tailored slacks. "My career! I built this branch!"
"You built an embezzlement scheme," Carter said, stepping forward with two uniform police officers behind him. "Marcus Hayes, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and identity theft."
The cold steel handcuffs clicked around Marcus’s wrists in front of every major business connection he had spent ten years cultivating.
Elena screamed, running toward the exit, but Evelyn Hayes stepped directly into her path.
"Take off that bracelet," Evelyn hissed, her aristocratic face twisted in pure disgust. "Take it off right now before I have the police strip it off you."
I didn't stay to watch the rest of the circus. I turned on my heels, walked out into the cool night air, and took my first real breath in months.
