Chapter 14 - The Fire Escape
"He’s in the apartment!" I yelled to the bondsman, throwing the door open.
Frank didn't hesitate. He kicked through the doorway, hand instantly resting on his sidearm holster.
From the bedroom down the hall, Marcus emerged.
He didn't look like the polished corporate executive I had lived with for four years. His designer shirt was torn and stained with sweat, his eyes were bloodshot and wild, and in his right hand, he held a heavy brass desk lamp he’d grabbed from the hallway table.
"You took everything from me!" Marcus screamed, locking eyes on me. "My career! My house! My mother won't even look at me!"
"Freeze! Put the weapon down!" Frank barked, stepping directly between Marcus and me, his hand drawing his taser.
Marcus laughed—a deranged, hollow sound. "You think you get to just walk away and live your little peaceful life after destroying mine?"
He charged forward, swinging the brass lamp with terrifying force.
Frank fired the taser. The two probes struck Marcus squarely in the chest, the sharp click-click-click of electricity filling the hallway.
Marcus convulsed, his muscles seizing, dropping the lamp with a loud clang before crashing heavily to the wooden floorboards, groaning in agony.
Frank stepped over him, pressing a knee into Marcus’s lower back and pulling his wrists together with heavy plastic zip-ties.
"Marcus Hayes," Frank muttered, out of breath. "Your bail is officially revoked."
I stood against the wall, trembling, watching the man I once thought I would spend the rest of my life with sobbing pathetically into the rug.
Ten minutes later, three squad cars pulled up outside, their red and blue lights flashing across the ceiling.
As they dragged Marcus out to the cruiser, he turned his head toward me one last time. "Elena lied to you, Chloe! She lied about everything!"
