Chapter 3 - The Front Door

I didn't bring him the duffel bag.
Instead, I got into my Honda Civic, threw the duplicate key fob into the cup holder, and drove straight into the heart of downtown.
The Sterling was the kind of building with a doorman wearing white gloves and a lobby smelling like sandalwood and inherited money. I walked through the sliding glass doors, holding my breath, fully expecting security to stop me.
"Help you, ma'am?" the concierge asked, his eyes scanning my oversized sweater and faded jeans.
I held up the fob. "Guest of Unit 14B."
He nodded, tapping his terminal. "Elevator to the left."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as the elevator ascended. Floor 8. Floor 11. Floor 14.
The elevator doors chimed and slid open into a carpeted hallway. Unit 14B sat at the very end of the corridor.

I pushed the door open.
"Marcus?" a voice called out from the kitchen. "You’re early. Did you bring the ginger ale? The nausea is killing me today."
Elena stepped into the foyer wearing a cashmere robe I had given Marcus for Christmas two years ago.
She stopped dead in her tracks. The glass of water in her hand shattered across the hardwood floor.
