Chapter 7 - The Bluff

Marcus didn't even acknowledge Carter sitting at the table. To Marcus, anyone who wasn't driving a luxury vehicle was invisible.

"Sign it," Marcus repeated, jabbing his finger onto the top page. "You sign the NDA, you agree to walk away from the joint account without contesting the wedding deposits, and I ensure Vance Consulting quietly dissolves without any federal inquiries."

"You’re threatening me in my own kitchen?" I asked, my voice calm, almost conversational.

"I’m protecting our family," he sneered. "Elena is carrying my legacy. You were always too rigid, Chloe. Too obsessed with rules. You brought this on yourself."

Carter leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. "Hey, Marcus. Quick question. When you routed the $85,000 from the Henderson Trust into the Vance LLC on March 14th, did you really think the Cayman intermediary wouldn't log the originating MAC address from your work desktop?"

Marcus froze. The color drained from his face for the second time that day.

"Who the hell are you?" Marcus spat.

"Carter Cole. Chief Investigator, Financial Crimes Division," Carter said calmly, flashing a badge from his jacket pocket. "And as of twelve minutes ago, this kitchen is officially a federal interview room."

Marcus stumbled back a half-step, knocking a dining chair sideways. "You... you can't do this. That’s private company property."

"It was private," Carter replied. "Until you committed wire fraud across state lines using Chloe’s identity without her notarized consent."

Marcus looked from Carter to me, his arrogance crumbling into sheer desperation. "Chloe... please. Think about what this will do to my firm. Think about my mother."

"Your mother?" I laughed bitterly. "The one whose tennis bracelet is currently sparkling on my sister’s wrist?"

Marcus reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out his cell phone as it began to ring frantically.

He glanced at the caller ID: Elena.

He put it on speaker without meaning to, his fingers trembling.

"Marcus!" Elena screamed through the speaker, hysterics cracking her voice. "The police are here at the penthouse! They’re asking about a stolen vehicle registered in your name!"
