Chapter 10 - The Boston Partners

The Harbor Club was draped in white silk and cascading orchids.
At 7:15 PM, the private banquet room was packed with fifty high-profile guests in black-tie attire. Marcus stood near the open bar in a tailored tuxedo, laughing loudly with the senior managing partners from Boston, pretending his entire life wasn't on fire.
Beside him stood Elena, wearing an emerald-green silk gown, looking slightly flushed but entirely triumphant. She had managed to dodge the eviction by charging a luxury hotel suite on Marcus’s corporate card.
When I walked through the double doors wearing a sharp, crimson pantsuit instead of a white rehearsal gown, the room went instantly quiet.
Marcus’s laugh caught in his throat. His champagne glass tilted, spilling onto the Persian rug.
"Chloe," he whispered, his eyes darting around the room to see who was watching.
"Don't stop the party on my account," I announced, my voice carrying across the high-ceilinged room.
The managing partner, Arthur Sterling—a sixty-year-old titan of industry—stepped forward with a confused smile. "Chloe, my dear! We were worried you’d been delayed. Marcus said you were feeling under the weather."
"I was feeling sick, Mr. Sterling," I said, walking directly to the central gift table. "Sick of the embezzlement occurring under your firm’s name."
The chatter in the room evaporated completely.
Marcus lunged toward me, his face purple. "Chloe, shut up! Get out of here right now!"
"Touch me, Marcus, and the federal marshals waiting outside will enter this room right now," I said firmly.
I opened my leather briefcase, took out the thick stack of bound dossiers, and placed them neatly in Arthur Sterling’s hands.
"What is this?" Sterling frowned, opening the cover page.
"That is the paper trail showing how your senior auditor, Marcus Hayes, funneled $420,000 from your offshore client trusts into private accounts to fund his double life with my sister," I said clearly.
Elena gasped, clutching Marcus’s arm. "She’s lying! She’s crazy and bitter!"
"Check page four, Mr. Sterling," Carter’s voice boomed from the entrance. "That’s Marcus’s personal digital signature authorizing wire transfers from your trust accounts to the Sterling Penthouse lease."
Sterling’s eyes narrowed into slits as he read. He slowly looked up from the paper, his gaze fixed on Marcus like a guillotine.
