Chapter 18 - The Garage Sale

The following weekend, I returned to the house I had shared with Marcus one last time to supervise the estate liquidation sale.

Every designer suit, every luxury watch, every piece of imported furniture Marcus had bought with dirty money was tagged and sold on the front lawn.

Neighbors and strangers browsed the racks, chatting happily under the afternoon sun.

Evelyn Hayes pulled up in a black town car, stepping out in dark sunglasses. She walked up the driveway, looking around with disdain.

"You really enjoyed destroying my boy, didn't you?" Evelyn said coldly, stopping in front of me.

"Your boy destroyed himself, Evelyn. You just funded the matches," I replied without looking up from my inventory clipboard.

Evelyn’s lips thinned into a razor line. "He was offered a plea deal yesterday. Ten years in minimum security. He’ll be out before he’s forty-five."

"Then I suggest you start saving up for his rent," I said calmly. "Because nobody else is going to pay it."

Evelyn stood there for a long moment, realization finally settling into her proud eyes that her family name was permanently disgraced. She turned on her heels, climbed back into her car, and sped away without buying a single thing.

Carter walked up holding two cold lemonade bottles, handing one to me with a grin. "Was that the dragon lady herself?"

"The one and only," I laughed, taking a cold sip. "And that was the final chapter of the Hayes family drama."
