"Chloe," Elena whispered, stepping back into the shards of glass without noticing.

She looked stunning. Her hair was freshly blown out, her skin glowing, wearing a platinum diamond tennis bracelet on her left wrist. The same bracelet Marcus claimed his mother had lost in probate court.

"Nice robe," I said. My voice was dead, devoid of whatever warmth I’d possessed an hour ago. "Matches the one he wears when he lies to my face."

Elena’s face transformed in real-time. Shock turned to fear, and then, within three seconds, settled into that old, toxic smirk she used to wear whenever she broke my childhood toys.

"You weren't supposed to find out this way," Elena said, crossing her arms over her chest, leaning against the marble kitchen island. "Marcus wanted to tell you after the wedding."

"After the wedding?" A dry, bitter laugh ripped out of my throat. "Why after the wedding, Elena? So I’d be legally bound to his debt while he supports his mistress?"

"I’m not his mistress," she sneered, her chin lifting defiantly. "I was with him first. Before you met him at that charity gala. You were just the safe choice, Chloe. The girl with the good credit score and the quiet temper who wouldn't embarrass him in front of his board partners."

"You’re carrying his child."

"I am," she said, placing a protective palm flat over her stomach. "And in four months, Marcus is filing for divorce, taking half the house you bought together, and moving in here permanently. He told me everything. You’re just the stepping stone, sweetie."

Before she could finish her sentence, the front door behind me chimed.

Marcus walked in holding a takeout bag from our favorite Italian deli.

"Elena, babe, they ran out of the—"

He froze. The bag dropped from his hand, spilling warm marinara sauce across the pristine white baseboards.
