CHAPTER 8: THE CONFRONTATION

Preston was waiting for me in the hospital parking lot.
He looked different.
His tuxedo was gone, replaced by a cheap suit and the kind of desperation that came from realizing the world was closing in.
"Evelyn."
"Preston."
"You think you've won, don't you?"
"I think you've lost."
"You don't understand. You've ruined everything. The company. The inheritance. My marriage."
"Your marriage? You almost killed my daughter."
"She was fine."
"She was bleeding."
"She was a thief."

His face went dark.
"Where did you get the recordings?"

And for the first time, I didn't back down.
"You touch me," I said, "and I'll make sure the whole world knows what you did."
"Who's going to believe you? You're nobody."
"I'm your sister. And I'm the person who has everything you've ever done recorded."
He hesitated.
And in that hesitation, I saw something I'd never seen before.
Fear.
"Get away from me," I said.
"Or I'll call the police."
"You wouldn't."
"Watch me."
He turned and walked away.
And I knew it wasn't over.
But I also knew something else.
May you like
It was only a matter of time before the truth came out.
And this time, I was ready.
