CHAPTER 38: THE ENGAGEMENT

A year after the funeral, Daniel proposed.
We were sitting on the porch of the lake house, watching the sunset. He got down on one knee and pulled out a small velvet box.
"Evelyn," he said, "I know we haven't been together long. But I've never felt this way about anyone. I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
I stared at him.
"I don't need a big life, Evelyn. I just need you."
I started to cry.
"Yes," I said. "Yes, I'll marry you."
He slid the ring onto my finger.
And I kissed him.
Sophie came running out of the house.
"She said yes!" I shouted.
Sophie screamed and hugged us both.
We were a family.
May you like
A real family.
And it was better than anything I had ever imagined.
