CHAPTER 25: THE PHONE CALL FROM PRISON

I received a call from Preston's prison.

He wanted to talk to me.

I agreed.

I didn't know why. Maybe I needed closure. Maybe I needed to hear him admit the truth.

I sat in my living room, the phone pressed to my ear.

"Evelyn," he said. His voice was flat. Hollow.

"Preston."

"I know you don't want to talk to me. But I needed to tell you something."

"What?"

"I'm sorry. For everything. For what I did to Sophie. For what I did to you."

"Why are you saying this now?"

"Because I have nothing left. No money. No wife. No friends. Just a cell and a lot of time to think."

I was silent.

"I'm not asking for forgiveness," he continued. "I don't deserve it. But I wanted you to know. I was wrong. About everything."

"Thank you for saying that, Preston. But it doesn't change anything."

"I know. I just wanted you to hear it."

"I heard it."

"Goodbye, Evelyn."

"Goodbye, Preston."

I hung up.

I didn't cry. I didn't feel anything.

Because he was a stranger to me now. Someone I used to know.

And I had moved on.
