CHAPTER 24: THE DIVORCE

The divorce was messy.
My mother fought it every step of the way. She tried to claim my father was mentally incompetent. She tried to claim he was having an affair. She tried to claim he had hidden assets.
But my father had a good lawyer. And he had evidence.
The same evidence I had used to bring her down.
The embezzlement. The forgery. The fraud.
When the divorce was finalized, my mother walked away with almost nothing. The courts ruled that the money she had stolen had to be returned. The house was sold. The assets were divided.
My mother was left with a small allowance and a mountain of legal debts.
She tried to appeal. She tried to fight. But she had lost.
And now she was alone.
I didn't feel sorry for her. She had made her choices. Now she had to live with them.
My father moved into a small condo near the lake. He started a new life. He joined a church. He made friends. He became the person he had always wanted to be.
He was happy.
May you like
For the first time in decades.
And I was happy for him.
