CHAPTER 29: THE FORGIVENESS
Sophie asked me a question one night.
"Mom, do you ever forgive Grandma?"
I thought about it.
"Forgiveness is complicated," I said. "It's not about forgetting what someone did. It's about letting go of the pain."
"So you don't forgive her?"
"I've let go of the pain. But I haven't forgotten what she did. And I don't think I ever will."
"Do you think she'll ever change?"
"I don't know, baby. But I hope so. For her sake."
Sophie was quiet for a moment.
"I think I forgive her," she said. "Not because she deserves it. But because I don't want to be angry anymore."
I hugged her.
"You're wiser than I am," I said.
"No, Mom. I just learned from you."
We sat in silence, watching the stars appear in the sky.
I had spent so many years fighting.
