CHAPTER 36: THE HOSPITAL ROOM

The hospital room was cold and sterile.
My mother lay in the bed, surrounded by machines and tubes. She looked small. Fragile. Nothing like the woman who had tried to destroy me.
"Evelyn," she said, her voice a whisper. "You came."
"I came."
"I didn't think you would."
"Neither did I."
She reached for my hand. I hesitated. Then I took it.
"I'm sorry," she said. "For everything. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness."
"You don't."
"But I want you to know that I'm sorry. For the wedding. For the trial. For all of it."
"Mother, you tried to destroy me. You tried to destroy Sophie."
"I know. And I was wrong. About everything."
I looked at her. The woman who had raised me. The woman who had hurt me. The woman who was now dying.
"I don't hate you," I said. "But I don't love you either. I just... I've moved on."
"That's more than I deserve."
"I know."
She closed her eyes.
"I'm proud of you, Evelyn. You became the person I never could be."
"Thank you, Mother."
I squeezed her hand.
And then I let go.
She died that night.
I stood in the hallway, watching the doctors do their work. I didn't cry. I felt... peace.
The fight was over.
And I had won.
Not because she was dead.
But because I was free.
Daniel put his arm around me.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"I'm okay," I said. "I'm really okay."
We walked out of the hospital together.
The sun was rising over the city.
A new day.
May you like
A new beginning.
And I was ready for it.
