CHAPTER 27: THE CONFRONTATION WITH MOM

My mother showed up at my house on a Saturday.
She was thinner. Grayer. Her eyes were hollow.
"Evelyn, please. I need your help."
"What do you want?"
"I have nowhere to go. Your father won't take me back. Grant won't answer my calls. I'm all alone."
"You did this to yourself, Mother."
"I know. I know I did. But I'm begging you. Just give me one chance."
I looked at her. This woman who had raised me. This woman who had destroyed me.
I didn't see anger.
I saw pity.
"I can't help you," I said. "Not because I don't want to. But because I've learned that helping you means losing myself."
"Evelyn—"
"Goodbye, Mother."
I closed the door.
And I walked away.
I didn't look back.
Because I had finally realized the truth.
