CHAPTER 37: THE FUNERAL

The funeral was small.

My father was there. A few of my mother's old friends. Daniel stood beside me, his hand in mine.

Sophie came home from college. She looked so grown up, so strong.

"Mom, are you okay?" she asked.

"I'm okay, baby. Really."

"Are you sad?"

"Sad? No. But I'm not happy either. I'm just... at peace."

Sophie nodded.

"That's what I want," she said. "Peace."

"You'll find it. Eventually."

"I already have, Mom. I have you."

I hugged her.

And I realized that everything I had been through had led me to this moment.

Surrounded by the people who truly loved me.
