CHAPTER 30: THE FUTURE

I stood on the porch of my lake house, watching the sun rise over the water.

Sophie was inside, still asleep. She was seventeen now. Getting ready for college. Getting ready for her own life.

I thought about everything we had been through.

The wedding. The blood. The trial. The redemption.

And I realized that it had all been worth it.

Because it had led me here.

To this moment.

To this peace.

I had built a life. A good life. A life filled with love and purpose and hope.

And I had done it all on my own.

I looked out at the lake.

The water was calm. The sky was clear. The future was bright.

I smiled.

Because I had finally found what I had been searching for my whole life.

Freedom.

Not freedom from pain.

But freedom from fear.

I had survived.

I had thrived.

And I had won.

I walked back inside.

Sophie was awake, making coffee.

"Morning, Mom."

"Morning, baby."

"I dreamed about Grandpa last night."

"Me too."

She smiled.

And I smiled back.

Because I knew that whatever came next, we would face it together.

And that was all that mattered.
