CHAPTER 12: THE TRIAL

The trial lasted three weeks.

Preston was charged with assault, fraud, and conspiracy.

My mother was charged with accessory to fraud.

My father was called to testify.

He didn't look at me the whole time.

But he said the truth.

"Your Honor, I didn't know about the embezzlement. I didn't know about the conspiracy. But I should have."

"Why?"

"Because I turned a blind eye to my son's behavior. I let him do what he wanted. And I punished my daughter for leaving."

The courtroom was silent.

"Your Honor, I failed my family. I failed my daughter. And I will never forgive myself."

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore, your honesty is appreciated. But it doesn't excuse what happened."

"I know, Your Honor. And I will accept whatever punishment the court sees fit."

Preston was sentenced to seven years.

My mother was sentenced to community service and fined.

I walked out of the courtroom with my head held high.

For the first time, I felt like I had won.
