CHAPTER 7: THE INHERITANCE

The reading of my grandmother's will was scheduled for Friday.
I didn't attend.
I knew what it would say.
Everything went to Preston.
Everything always went to Preston.
But I had something better than an inheritance.
I had a weapon.
At 2:15 p.m., I received a call from my grandmother's lawyer.
"Mrs. Whitmore?"
"Yes."
"I'm calling to inform you that your grandmother's will has been successfully contested."
"I'm sorry?"
"Your recordings, along with the evidence you provided, have proven that the will was executed under duress. Specifically, your brother Preston threatened your grandmother to ensure she cut you out of the inheritance."
I sat down.
"I have a copy of the new ruling. You're entitled to fifty percent of the estate. Your brother's share has been frozen pending further investigation."
"How?"
"Because your evidence showed that he threatened your grandmother with physical harm if she didn't change her will. That's coercion. That's a crime."
I was speechless.
May you like
"This isn't just about money, is it?" I asked.
"No. It's about justice. And I think you've been denied it for too long."
