CHAPTER 22: THE FORGOTTEN WITNESS

CHAPTER 22: THE FORGOTTEN WITNESS

A year after the trial, I received an unexpected visitor.

Her name was Diane. She had been a wedding guest that night. I didn't remember her. She had been just another face in the crowd.

But she had seen everything.

"Evelyn," she said, "I know I should have come forward sooner. But I was afraid. Your family has a lot of power."

"Why are you coming forward now?"

"Because I saw what happened to you. And I saw what happened to Sophie. And I couldn't live with myself if I stayed silent."

She told me she had been sitting at the table next to ours. She had seen Preston plant the phone in Sophie's jacket. She had seen him grab the menu board. She had seen him swing it at my daughter's head.

"I'm sorry I didn't speak up," she said. "I should have. I was just so scared."

"It's okay," I said. "What matters is that you're speaking up now."

"I'm willing to testify. In court. In any hearing. Whatever it takes."

I felt tears prick at my eyes. For the first time in years, I felt like someone was truly on my side.

"Thank you," I said.

"Thank you for being brave, Evelyn. You made it easier for the rest of us to be brave too."

May you like

I hugged her.

And I realized that the truth had a way of finding its way out. No matter how hard people tried to bury it.
