CHAPTER 30: THE HEALING

Emma was doing better.
The nightmares stopped.
The smiles returned.
She made friends in the village.
She started school again.
She was becoming herself again.
And I was becoming myself too.
I started writing.
About everything.
The kidnapping. The betrayal. The survival.
It was healing.
The words pouring out of me.
The weight lifting off my shoulders.
Thomas encouraged me.
"It's important," he said. "You need to tell your story."
"Who would want to read it?"
"Everyone. Because it's not just your story. It's the story of every woman who's been silenced. Every mother who's been betrayed. Every survivor who's fought to be heard."
I kept writing.
And when I finished, I sent the manuscript to an agent.
She called me a month later.
"Evelyn?" she said. "This is incredible. We're going to publish it."
I was speechless.
"Really?"
"Really. Your story needs to be told. And you're the only one who can tell it."
I smiled.
For the first time in years, I felt proud.
Not just of the book.
But of everything I'd been through.
And everything I'd overcome.
I was a survivor.

And that meant something.
It meant everything.
