CHAPTER 13: THE SAFE HOUSE

The drive took six hours.
The safe house was tucked into a mountainside, surrounded by trees and silence.
It looked like a cabin.
But it was so much more.
Concrete walls. Steel doors. Cameras everywhere.
I felt safe for the first time in weeks.
Emma ran into the house.
"Mommy! Look! There's a playground!"
It was small but perfect.
She climbed onto the swing.
And she laughed.
The sound was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.
I sat down on the porch.
Thomas appeared beside me.
"Mrs. Harper, we need to discuss the next steps."
"Tell me."
"We've already started the identity process. You'll be Jane Adams. Emma will be Lily Adams. You'll move to a small town in Colorado. A place where no one will look for you."
"Colorado?"
"It's quiet. Rural. Easy to disappear."
"And Daniel?"
"He's in federal custody. He's not going anywhere."
"But you said he has connections."
"He does. But we're monitoring them. If anyone from the network tries to contact him, we'll know."
"And Emma's trust?"
"It's being transferred to a secure account. We'll manage it until she's old enough."
"And when will that be?"
"Until the network is dismantled. Until we're sure you're safe. It could be years."
"I don't care how long it takes."
Thomas nodded.
"Then we're on the same page."
We sat in silence for a moment.
Then Thomas spoke again.
"There's something else you need to know."
"What?"
"Daniel is cooperating with the authorities. He's giving them information about the network. Names. Locations. Transactions."
"Cooperating?"
"He's trying to make a deal. He wants a reduced sentence. And he wants something else."
"What?"
"Access to Emma."
"No."
"He's her father. He has legal rights."
"After everything he's done?"
"His lawyers are arguing that he was coerced. That he was acting under duress."
"It's a lie."
"It doesn't matter. They'll fight for visitation. They'll fight for custody."
I felt the rage boiling inside me.
"He tried to sell our daughter. He took her from me. He looked me in the eye and drove away."
"I know. But the legal system is complicated. Especially in cases like this."
"What can I do?"
"Fight him. Every step of the way. And don't give up."
I looked at Emma.
She was still swinging.
Laughing.
May you like
She had no idea how close she'd come to losing everything.
And I swore I'd never let that happen again.
