CHAPTER 11: THE GRANDMOTHER

It took three days for the news to reach me.

A lawyer showed up at my door.

"Mrs. Harper? My name is Marcus Sterling. I represent the estate of Eleanor Whitfield."

"Who?"

"Your grandmother."

"I don't have a grandmother. I never knew her."

"That's because she was estranged from your mother. But she never forgot about you. And she certainly never forgot about Emma."

I stared at him.

"Emma?"

"She left a trust fund. A significant one. And she specified that it would go directly to your daughter upon her eighteenth birthday."

"How significant?"

"Approximately twelve million dollars."

I nearly choked.

"Twelve million?"

"Plus the estate itself. A house. Some investments. It's all been held in a trust for the past thirty years."

"Thirty years?"

"Your grandmother died six weeks ago. But she set up the trust long before that. She wanted to make sure you and your daughter were protected."

"Protected from what?"

The lawyer looked uncomfortable.

"From your husband. Or rather, the man you thought was your husband."

I sat down heavily.

"You knew about Daniel?"

"We knew about his history. His... business dealings. The people he worked for. Your grandmother didn't trust him. She had people watching him for years."

"Watching him? For what?"

"He was looking for something. A way to access the trust. He knew about the money. He just didn't know the details."

"And Emma?"

"He knew she was the key. Without her, the trust couldn't be accessed. So he needed her close. Controlled. Until she came of age."

I felt the pieces fall into place.

Daniel hadn't just kidnapped Emma for a random buyer.

He'd been planning to use her.

For years.

"You're saying my own husband was going to use my daughter to steal money from a grandmother I never even met?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying."

I stood up.

I felt the anger rising.

"Where is he now?"

"Federal custody. He's not going anywhere."

"But he'll try. He'll try to escape. He'll try to hurt Emma again."

"We're doing everything we can to prevent that."

"Then tell me what I need to do."

The lawyer looked at me.

"Keep your daughter safe. And don't trust anyone."

"Anyone?"

"Anyone who wasn't part of this investigation. There are people out there who will try to get to you. People who work for the network Daniel was part of."

"What network?"

"An international smuggling operation. They move people, money, and information across borders. And they've been looking for Emma for a long time."

My blood ran cold.

"They know about her?"

"They know about the money. And they'll do anything to get it."

"Then what do I do?"

"Stay invisible. Don't tell anyone where you're going. Don't post on social media. Don't use your real name. Make yourself disappear."

"I don't know how to do that."

"Then learn. Quickly."

He handed me a card.

"Call this number if you need help. It's a private security firm. They know about your situation. They've been protecting your grandmother's assets for years."

I looked at the card.

"What about Emma?"

"She'll need to disappear too. New identity. New life. New everything."

"For how long?"

"Until they're caught. Or until they stop looking. Which could take years."

I looked at Emma.

She was playing with her doll in the corner.

Her small fingers were tracing the doll's hair.

She had no idea her whole world was about to change.

"Make it happen," I said.

"Mrs. Harper, are you sure?"

"I've never been more sure of anything."
