CHAPTER 19: THE SIGNATURE

I sat in the conference room with Olivia and Thomas.
The letter was on the table.
It was short.
But it said everything.
I read it out loud.
"I, Maya Harper, am willing to testify against the network known as Blackwood. I am also willing to provide any and all information I have regarding my husband's involvement with this network. I request that any witnesses who come forward be given full protection and amnesty. This is my promise. This is my word."
I picked up the pen.
And I signed it.
Olivia smiled.
"This changes everything," she said.
"I hope so."
"It does. The witnesses will come forward. The network will unravel. And your husband will face justice."
"What about Julian Blackwood?"
"He'll be arrested. Tried. Convicted. He'll spend the rest of his life in prison."
"And Emma?"
"Emma will be safe. I promise."
I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But I'd been promised safety before.
And it hadn't lasted.
So I kept the letter close.
And I prepared for the worst.

Because that was all I could do.
That was all I ever did.
