CHAPTER 29: THE NEWS

It came on a Wednesday.

Thomas knocked on the door.

"Can I come in?"

"Of course."

He sat down.

"I have news."

"Good news?"

"I think so. Daniel has been arrested. Again. This time, he's not getting out."

"You're sure?"

"I'm sure. He's in maximum security. No visitors. No communication. He's not going anywhere."

I felt the weight lift.

"What about the network?"

"Crumbling. Julian Blackwood is in custody. The witnesses are testifying. It's over, Maya. It's finally over."

I didn't believe it at first.

But then I did.

And I cried.

Tears of relief.

Tears of joy.

Tears for everything I'd been through.

And tears for the future.

May you like

For the life I could finally have.

The life I deserved.
