CHAPTER 22: THE JOURNEY

The flight to London was long and dark.

Emma slept in my arms.

I stared out the window.

Thinking.

About everything I'd lost.

About everything I'd gained.

About Daniel.

And the life we'd never have again.

We landed at Heathrow.

Thomas was waiting.

"Welcome to London," he said.

"Thank you."

"We have a safe house. It's in the countryside. Very secure."

"Can we stay there permanently?"

"If you want. We can set you up. New identities. New lives."

I looked at Emma.

She was waking up.

Rubbing her eyes.

"Mommy? Where are we?"

"We're in England, baby. A new place."

"Will we go home?"

"Maybe one day."

I didn't tell her the truth.

That home no longer existed.

That home was a memory.

A place that had died with Daniel's betrayal.

A new start.

A new life.

May you like

And I was going to make it work.

No matter what.
