Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Choice

The paramedics arrived in six minutes.
They put Elena on a stretcher. They put Daniel on another.
Rosa refused to sit down. She stood by the pool, dripping, shivering, her hands torn.
A cop named Davis asked questions. Miriam answered first.
“It was an accident. The pool cover malfunctioned.”
Elena tried to speak. Her voice came out raw. “She pushed me. She tied my hands.”
Miriam’s face didn’t change. “She’s confused. She’s been under a lot of stress.”
Rosa stepped forward. “She pushed her. Daniel helped. I saw it.”
Davis looked at Rosa. “And you are?”
“The maid.”
The cop wrote something down.
Daniel was on the stretcher, an oxygen mask on his face. His eyes were open. He was staring at his mother.
Miriam walked over to him. “Tell them it was an accident, Daniel.”
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.”
He pulled the mask off. His voice was barely a whisper.
“She did it.”
The cop turned.
Miriam’s face went white.
“Daniel, what are you—”
“She did it. And I helped.”
