Chapter 8 - The Cover Opens

The glass slid back with a grinding sound.
Elena broke the surface first, gasping, coughing, vomiting water.
Rosa came up next, dragging Daniel by the collar.
He wasn’t moving.
Walter stood at the edge, his face pale. “Jesus Christ.”
Miriam screamed from the deck. “What did you do?!”
Walter ignored her. He reached down and grabbed Elena’s arm. “I got you, sweetheart.”
Rosa pushed Daniel onto the steps. His lips were blue. His face was slack.
Elena crawled onto the deck, her soaked dress clinging to her belly. She couldn’t stop shaking.
Rosa didn’t stop. She rolled Daniel onto his back and started chest compressions.
“Call 911,” she told Walter.
Walter fumbled with his phone.
Miriam just stood there. Her eyes were on Daniel.
“Don’t touch him,” she said.
Rosa kept pumping.
Daniel’s body jerked. Water gushed from his mouth.
Then he coughed.
He turned his head and looked at Elena.
